A sole trader who just needs the tax return done
You keep your own records through the year and want someone to take the January panic away.
- Self-Assessment Tax Return
- from £200 / year
from £17
a month, billed monthly rather than as one January bill
Accountant and bookkeeper prices
Most accountants will not put a number on a page. Here is every service with its starting price, what makes a price move, and what a few typical businesses actually end up paying.
Services start from
£10a month
Worth knowing
If I am keeping your books through the year, there is far less to untangle when the accounts, the tax return and the quarterly MTD updates fall due. That smaller job costs less, so the saving is passed on rather than pocketed.
The builder below applies this automatically as soon as you tick a bookkeeping service.
Build your package
Tick what you think you need. The starting price builds as you go, and you can send the selection straight to Lewis so the first conversation begins from something concrete.
Worked examples
Three businesses, with the arithmetic shown. Everything is expressed monthly, because that is how billing works: the quarterly and annual pieces are spread across the year rather than landing in one go.

from £17
a month, billed monthly rather than as one January bill
You now have to keep digital records and send HMRC four updates a year, on top of your tax return.
from £43
a month, covering all four quarterly updates and the return
The books need keeping properly through the year, VAT is quarterly, and there is payroll to run. Because bookkeeping is included, the year-end work comes down by 25%.
from £143
a month, after a £150 saving on the year-end work
The honest part
Every price on this page begins with the word from, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. These are the four things that actually change the number.
A hundred transactions a month is a different job from a thousand. Volume is the single biggest factor in any bookkeeping price.
Books that are already clean and in software cost less to maintain than a shoebox of receipts and a backlog to sort out first.
One trade, one bank account and no VAT is straightforward. Multiple income sources, property, or a partner in the business is more work.
Reconciliation once a quarter costs less than monthly management accounts with commentary. Both are legitimate, they just answer different questions.
One-off
Getting you set up properly is a real piece of work: identity checks for anti-money-laundering, professional clearance with your previous accountant, and migrating or setting up your software. It is charged once, at the start, and the exact figure depends on how complex the move is. You will see it on your proposal before you agree to anything.
Not trading
If the business has not traded, the filing still has to happen but it is a much smaller job, so it is priced separately rather than folded into the figures above.
