In short

What is a VAT return?

VAT-registered businesses report the VAT they have charged and paid to HMRC, usually every quarter, through Making Tax Digital software. The return and any payment are due one month and seven days after the end of each VAT period. I prepare and submit it for you.

Who it's for

Is this for you?

  • Businesses with taxable turnover over £90,000, which must be VAT registered
  • Businesses that registered voluntarily to reclaim VAT on costs
  • Anyone approaching the threshold who needs to know when to register
  • Businesses wanting a second pair of eyes on a return they do themselves

What's included

What I do for you.

  • Your VAT worked out

Sales and purchases reconciled against your records, VAT on costs checked so nothing you are entitled to reclaim is missed.

  • Filed through MTD software

Every VAT return must be kept and submitted digitally under Making Tax Digital. I make sure your records and the submission meet the rules.

  • The right scheme

Standard, cash accounting or flat rate: I check the scheme you are on still suits the business, because the wrong one can cost you.

  • What to pay, and when

You get the figure and the payment date each quarter, well before it is due.

Questions

VAT returns, asked and answered.

Something else on your mind? Ask me directly. I reply within 1 business day.

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your VAT taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to go over that in the next 30 days alone. You can also register voluntarily below it, which can make sense if you mainly sell to other VAT-registered businesses.

What happens if a VAT return is late?

Late returns earn penalty points, and once you reach the threshold for your filing frequency a financial penalty follows. Late payment attracts interest and penalties separately. Filing on time, every time, avoids all of it.

Which VAT scheme should I be on?

It depends on your margins, your customers and how you get paid. The flat rate and cash accounting schemes suit some businesses and cost others money. I check this as part of the service.

How much does it cost?

From £90 a quarter, spread monthly. Businesses with bookkeeping included usually find the VAT return is quicker, because the records are already right.
