In short

What is a Self-Assessment tax return?

It is how you tell HMRC about income that has not already been taxed, such as self-employed profit, rental income or dividends. For each tax year ending 5 April, the online return and any tax owed are due by 31 January. I prepare it, you approve it, and I file it.

Who it's for

Is this for you?

  • Sole traders earning more than £1,000 a year from self-employment
  • Landlords with rental income
  • Partners in a business partnership
  • Company directors with income that is not taxed through payroll, such as dividends
  • Anyone HMRC has sent a notice to file a return

What's included

What I do for you.

  • Your figures, checked

I go through your income and expenses, whether they come from bookkeeping I already do for you, your own software, or a folder of receipts, and make sure every allowable expense is claimed.

  • The tax worked out, in plain English

Income tax, Class 4 National Insurance and any payments on account, with a clear summary of what is due and on which date, so nothing lands unexpectedly.

  • Your approval before anything is sent

You see the return before it goes. Once you are happy, I submit it to HMRC and send you the confirmation.

  • Spread across the year

The fee is spread monthly rather than arriving as one bill in January, the month you are most likely to have a tax bill of your own.

Questions

Self-Assessment, asked and answered.

Something else on your mind? Ask me directly. I reply within 1 business day.

When is my Self-Assessment return due?

The online return for the tax year ending 5 April is due by 31 January the following year, and so is any tax you owe. If you file on paper, the deadline is 31 October. Filing late brings an automatic £100 penalty even if you owe no tax, and it grows from there.

I have left it late. Can you still help?

Yes. Get in touch as soon as you can. The earlier I have your records, the more time there is to check everything properly rather than rushing it.

What are payments on account?

If your Self-Assessment bill is £1,000 or more, HMRC usually asks for two advance payments towards the next year, each half of this year's bill, due on 31 January and 31 July. They do not apply if 80% or more of your tax was already collected at source, for example through PAYE.

Does Making Tax Digital change this?

For sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, it already has: from April 2026 they keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates, then still file a final return. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027.

Making Tax Digital, explained

How much does it cost?

From £200 a year, spread monthly. A nil-turnover return is £100 a year. If I also do any of your bookkeeping, the return drops by 25%, because books kept through the year mean far less to untangle at the end.
