Questions

Before you ask.

What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

A bookkeeper records what happens in the business day to day: sales, purchases, what has been paid and what has not. An accountant takes those records and produces the statutory accounts and tax returns from them. I do both, which means the records are kept the way the year end will need them.

Do I need to use particular software?

You do not have to, but it helps. I am a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor, so QuickBooks is where I can add the most value, and I also work with Xero, Sage and FreeAgent. If you are still on spreadsheets, that is a fine place to start from and we can talk about whether moving is worth it for you.

How often do you do the bookkeeping?

That depends on the service and on how busy the business is. Some clients need reconciliation monthly, others quarterly around their VAT. We agree the rhythm at the start and adjust it if the business changes.

Can you take over books that are in a mess?

Yes, and it is more common than you would think. Bring them as they are. Sorting out a backlog is its own piece of work, so I will look at what is there and tell you what it involves before we start rather than after.
